A Thoughtful Short-Term Rental in Birmingham’s Mercantile on Morris
Location:
Morris Avenue, Birmingham, AL
Project Category:

The Why Behind the Work
During COVID, travel patterns were shifting quickly. With hotels no longer operating as usual, more visitors were choosing condos over traditional hotel stays. The goal was to create a short-term rental that felt fresh, fun, and intentional. Something that would immediately stand out in a crowded listing feed. More than anything, this project needed to stop the scroll, attract the right guests, and prove that thoughtful design could directly impact performance.

How We Brought It to Life
The approach was to design a space that felt playful, memorable, and instantly eye-catching. Leaning into a bold wallpaper and a neon sign helped create a clear focal point that photographed well and felt fun without being overdone. These choices were popular at the time, but they were also strategic, giving guests a moment they wanted to share and remember. By designing with both the listing photos and the guest experience in mind, the studio balanced personality with purpose in a way that supported visibility and bookings.
Intentional Design Choices

Client Reflections
"This studio was a fun and valuable learning experience in short-term rental design and hosting. It was booked consistently the entire time it was owned, which reinforced how much thoughtful design matters in performance. The space was so well received that it ultimately sold fully furnished, giving the next owner a true turnkey property. It’s exactly the kind of result that shows what’s possible when design, strategy, and market awareness work together."

The Finished Space
Once complete, the studio felt confident, fun, and unmistakably intentional. Every design choice worked hard in a small footprint, creating a space that felt elevated without sacrificing function. The playful finishes and smart layout translated beautifully in photos and in person, helping the listing stand out in a competitive market. Guests were drawn to the personality of the space and stayed for the comfort and convenience of the location. The result was a short-term rental that proved thoughtful design could directly support visibility, bookings, and guest experience.
