The Why Behind the Work
After the loss of a close friend and a growing desire to be near his mother to help care for her, the client found himself rethinking everything. He had been searching for a new home in Birmingham, but nothing felt right or made practical sense. Instead of continuing the search, he chose to invest in the family home, honoring its history while adapting it to meet everyone’s current needs. The goal was to create a space that felt steady, supportive, and thoughtfully updated, without losing the meaning it already held.

How We Brought It to Life
The approach centered on honoring the home’s traditional roots while thoughtfully introducing French country elements he loved. By opening the floor plan, the kitchen and living areas were reworked to feel more connected and functional for everyday family life. Custom built-ins were designed to flank the fireplace, creating meaningful storage for his mother’s books and decor while preserving the heart of the home. A larger pantry was added to support her love of cooking, ensuring the renovation didn’t just look better but truly worked better for the entire family.
Intentional Design Choices

Client Reflections
"Kristen was the best person to have handled my total house renovation. She is creative, highly competent, always prepared, and has a wealth of resources to access for any level of design project. Most of all….she really LISTENS and she can interpret design desires into the best possible outcome. The entire process was a joy."

The Finished Space
The completed renovation gave the home a renewed sense of purpose while honoring its history. What once felt closed off and outdated now feels open, cohesive, and thoughtfully designed for real family life. The vaulted ceilings, improved flow, and expanded functional spaces made daily routines easier and gatherings more natural. At the same time, traditional details and French country touches preserved the warmth and familiarity that made the house meaningful in the first place. The result is a home that feels steady, supportive, and beautifully updated for the next chapter of this family’s life.
